Research shows that mothers who receive help in the early days tend to have an easier time breastfeeding and tend to breastfeed longer.
The American Acedemy of Pediatrics recommends that all babies have a feeding assessment between day 3 and day 5 to assess latch and weight gain. Your baby's health care provider may have a Board Certified Lactation Consultant who offers this Service. If not, you are welcome to call and schedule an appointment with Lactation Services of Southington.
Prenatal Consults:
Recommended for all mothers to gain knowledge about breastfeeding and how making milk works, strategies for success.
Lactation Consult:
Recommended for mothers experiencing sore nipples, mastitis, difficulty with latch, plugged ducts, returning back to work, concerns regarding infant weight gain, premature birth, transitioning home from the NICU.
Consult includes gathering history, assessment of mother and baby, observing feed, weight with a Medela Baby Weigh Scale, developing a plan of care, communication with mother and baby's health care providers, and follow-up as appropriate.
Breast Pump Rental Station:

If you are pregnant and planning on breastfeeding then this class is for you! It will give you information to help you get off to a great start, know where to find help, and learn how and when to use a breast pump. Fee is $40. I did it! You can too!: Working and Breastfeeding
Designed for mothers who are returning to work or school while breastfeeding. Information on renting or purchasing breast pumps, how to get started pumping, troubleshooting milk supply, which pump is right for you. Fee is $40. Call 860-919-5320 for information on class schedule.
Milk Mates:
Mother to mother support in a group setting. We meet monthly at Mulberry Gardens at 58 Mulberry St., Southington, CT 06489 in the lower level. Meeting is free of charge and infants and toddlers are welcome. Next meeting January 30th, 2011 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Join us! February meeting will be February 27th! Plan ahead and join us!
Also, Lactation Services of Southington is available for corporate lactation support, community outreach (breastfeeding presentations to community organizations, schools), free of charge.
